Hong Kong introduces new security law Article 23

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 21 March 2024

Hong Kong's new security law will usher the territory "into a new era of authoritarianism".

That's according to Human Rights Watch, who are reacting after Hong Kong's China-controlled legislature voted unanimously in favour of new, broad-based security powers.

The legislation, known as Article 23, will target espionage, treason, and foreign political interference - however with vague definitions as to what constitutes these crimes.

It also applies to Hong Kong residents and businesses regardless of whether they are based in Hong Kong or not.

Human Rights Watch China director Maya Wang spoke to Corin Dann.
