SailGP NZ leg's future uncertain due to dolphin policy

From Morning Report, 8:25 am on 25 March 2024

A dolphin expert says it was a poor decision to host Sail GP in Christchurch, and other experts had already advised organisers to run the race in winter.

Saturday's leg of the yacht race was cancelled when a dolphin was sighted on the course.

SailGP chief executive Sir Russell Coutts slammed that decision, calling the dolphin policy "extreme" and an example of unprecedented layers of bureaucracy and red tape handcuffing the country.

He said Sail GP would not return to Christchurch next year. Coutts, and Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger did not respond to Morning Report's invitation to come on the programme Monday morning, and Sail GP managing director Andrew Thompson declined our invitation.

Otago University zoology professor emeritus Liz Slooten spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
