Disability Support Network on funding boost

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 27 March 2024

The Labour party says it's a "massive vote of no confidence" in the Disability Issues Minister that Cabinet has now assumed responsibility for future decisions about disability funding.

This comes after Whaikaha, the Ministry for Disabled People, and its minister, Penny Simmonds, blindsided the sector by announcing changes to purchasing rules for disabled people's equipment, services, and respite funding.

The minister has subsequently admitted the communication was badly handled.

Peter Reynolds, chief executive of the country's not-for-profit Disability Support Network, says there's plenty of blame to be shouldered by Labour as well for having set up the ministry with relatively scant funding.

Reynolds spoke to Corin Dann.
