Today and for the rest of August we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop.
It was 50 years ago on the 11th August in 1973 - DJ Kool Herc and his sister put on a party in the Bronx, NYC and the rest is history.
Jeff Chang has written extensively on Culture, politics, the arts and music. His book - 'Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation' has become one of the essential readings on the beginnings of hip hop.
He has interviewed DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, and Ice Cube, he is also the man to speak to about political and social nature of the time - the events, the ideas, the music, and the art that marked the beginning of hip hop.
Charlotte Ryan spoke to hip hop historian Jeff Chang from his home in California.
