West Coast leads the country in tourism spending growth

Amidst trying financial times, one New Zealand region has got it made in the shade.

The South Island's West Coast had the biggest surge in tourism spending in 2023, up a massive 30.6 percent on its performance the year prior.

It was also one of only two regions in the entire country to have positive GDP growth in the last financial quarter alongside Auckland.

It's also got the most affordable housing in the country.

So what is the secret to the Coast's ascendancy?
