Unpredictable, risky conditions for NZ fire crews in Australia

From Summer Report, 8:25 am on 8 January 2020

A New Zealand firefighter who helped tackle the Australian bushfires in November 2019 says fresh crews being deployed today will face unprecedented and unpredictable conditions.

Twenty-two firefighters will leave for a 10 day deployment after the Australian Government formally requested help from New Zealand -157 firefighters in total have been sent since late October.

Scott Marchant is Auckland's deputy principal rural fire officer and knows exactly what it's like to not only face the bushfires, but to have fire take your home, too.

He told Leigh-Marama McLachlan what the new deployment should expect when they get there.
