More budget debate and next year's tax rates

From The House , 6:55 pm on 11 June 2019

The Government's plans for spending taxpayer money were announced at the end of last month but the debate will likely last for another couple weeks.

Each budget is debated after its announcement for up to 15 hours in the House. The major players (Leader of the Opposition, Prime Minister, other party leaders) all gave their speeches after the Finance Minister's statement on May 30.

The rest of the time (13 hours 38min at this stage) is allocated is split up over a few sitting days and used by other MPs to talk about spending in their portfolios or areas of interest.

There are other matters to attend to however, like confirming the tax rates for next year. Listen to the audio to hear the Leader of the House Chris Hipkins give details on the workload for this week.
