A man has died after being shot in Rangitikei, and a homicide investigation has been launched.

Detective Inspector Craig Sheridan said police were called to Makohine Lane in the small Rangitikei township of Ōhingaiti, near State Highway 1, just before 3.30am on Sunday.

They were told a man had been shot.

"He was transported to Whanganui Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died," Sheridan said.

Officers were following "strong lines of inquiry", and would be speaking to a number of people as well as working at several addresses in the area, he said.

Police also announced today that a separate homicide investigation is underway elsewhere in the Manawatū Region after a man was fatally shot about 7.30pm on Saturday in Palmerston North.
