Muslims nationwide are set to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Thursday after the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand confirmed the sighting of a new moon.

The declaration brings to an end more than a month of fasting, prayer and reflection in the community as it observed Ramadan.

The sighting of the moon signals the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, with Muslims gathering for special prayers at mosques.

The country will witness many Eid celebrations across the motu, including a special event at Auckland's Eden Park on Thursday from 8am.

In Wellington, a special event will be held from 8am at Sky Stadium.

NZ Eid Day was also organising special community events in Christchurch on 14 April and Hamilton on 13 April.
